Read to Succeed Rhode Island
During the summer, Read to Succeed - a Rhode Island innovative summer literacy and college scholarship program - enables underprivileged South Providence students to maintain their learning momentum. The powerful incentive is a $1,000 college scholarship award each year for up to five years. Thus, a potential $5,000 investment towards college is our lasting impact.
One book can change a life.
Founded by Ralph and Barbara Papitto in 2008, Read to Succeed was created to address the reading achievement gap between low- and higher-income students head-on and to instill a lifelong enjoyment of reading. By encouraging the crucial activity of summer reading, Read to Succeed helps South Providence's low-income, largely minority students from falling behind and encourages these students, through scholarships, to focus on attending college.
"Read to Succeed has helped me a lot with pronouncing words and spelling the words correctly. I really appreciated having Read to Succeed in my school. Also, I just want to hug you and say THANKS!” – 5th grader
We achieved the goals of a Five-Year Growth Plan!
In 2018, Read to Succeed will remain level with its strong enrollment commitment for all 4th through 8th grades at our partner schools. Our 2017 summer reading program, successfully concluded with $273,000 in college scholarships. We are also pleased to report that our first class of students (‘08) have graduated high school and contacted us for their college scholarships. As a result, $74,000 in scholarship funds have been transferred to colleges and universities for the benefit of 32 Read to Succeed scholars.
