Read to Succeed awarded $430,000 in college scholarships to 430 Providence students
Joined by Rhode Island General Treasurer, Chairwoman Barbara Papitto,
Read to Succeed Board Members, and Parents,
Read to Succeed hosted student scholarship ceremonies in late October.
Read to Succeed’s effective and efficient model remains consistent since its founding in 2008 – 16 years ago! This year, 620 students were provided with a book list based on their reading skills as determined by their teachers. In May, Read to Succeed delivered 3,720 books in custom bookbags to our five partner schools; Bishop McVinney School, Community Preparatory School, Highlander Charter School, San Miguel School and Sophia Academy. Upon completing each book, students took an online comprehension test through the Accelerated Reader Program. A record breaking 430 students passed all six tests. These students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship in a Read to Succeed-sponsored Rhode Island CollegeBound Saver account, the state’s 529 college savings program, totaling $430,000 in scholarships!
Since its founding, Read to Succeed has awarded
nearly 30,000 free books and $3.1 million in scholarships.
